More About Male Pattern Baldness

Androgenetic alopecia has been proven to account for the vast majority of hair loss in men, as high as 95%. The effects of this can be easily identified by the pattern of hair loss, the first initial sign is normally a receding hairline at the temple areas, followed by thinning around the crown of the head. These 2 areas will slowly advance towards each other, eventually meeting in the middle once the alopecia is advanced enough.

In the 1940’s Dr James Hamilton found that genetic factors were the key cause of alopecia in men, however more recent studies have elaborated on these findings. It is now known that alopecia in men is caused primarily by the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is derived from existing testosterone by alpha 5 enzyme. In men who have a history of androgenetic alopecia studies have shown that the DHT the process starts an exponential miniturisation process of the hair follicles.

When androgenetic alopecia occurs large active hair follicles in specific areas begin to change to smaller less active ones that shrink slightly with each new growth cycle, the DHT present also conspires to shorten each “growth phase” of the scalp. The enzyme 5 alpha is thought to be the major cause of this. Although testosterone levels can be completely normal in a man affected by androgenetic alopecia, the alpha 5 enzyme is what causes the massively increased levels of dihydrotestosterone in the shaft of the hair follicle.

Put simply, we have found that the most effective way to treat male pattern baldness is to stop the production of the dihydrotestosterone, thereby halting / reversing the progress of male pattern baldness.
