Is It Possible to Stop Hair Loss

The hair replacement cycle is actually quite interesting. You are probably thinking that it must not take much to interest your humble informational writer, but bear with me and you just might come around to my way of thinking.

The average number of scalp hairs ranges from about 100 to 125 thousand with the circumference of the follicle determining the robustness of the hair shaft. Each day about 100 scalp hairs are lost through natural means only to be replaced through the natural replacement cycle which includes two major phases: the growth phase, which lasts four to six years, and the resting phase which lasts two to three months. Under normal conditions 90 percent of cycling hair is in the growth phase with only ten percent in the resting phase (dormant or dying). Any imbalance or disruption in the hair replacement cycle will ultimately lead you down the road to the big bald house. Since we are confident in our ability to stop hair loss obviously the big bald house is not going to our permanent residence.

There are literally hundreds of factors than can disrupt the hair replacement cycle including: poor nutrition, crash dieting, stress and/or anxiety, disease such as lupus or diabetes, heredity, fungal or bacterial scalp infections, harsh shampoos, frequent coloring or perms, large doses of vitamin A, oral contraceptive, fever, chemotherapy drugs, as well as certain prescription medications.

If in your analysis you find that you either don't have or resolved any disease related conditions and are for the most part doing everything right to stop hair loss then it is likely that you can slow and possibly reverse balding and thinning with a little help. The key will be to reinvigorate and opening damaged follicles while supplying the hair with the nutrition it required to produce vibrant new hair.

There of course is minoxidil which is a widely available topical treatment but there are also a number of natural oils which have shown to be an effective tool to both condition the scalp and support re-growth. The three most often mentioned are pumpkin oil, almond oil, and jojoba oil.

Additionally, most topical treatments alone will not produce optimal results due to the underlying hormones linked to androgenetic alopecia. In this pursuit the prescription medication Propecia is often suggested for men with alternatives such as the natural herb nettle root being a safe and effective option for most women.

In summary, it is certainly possible to stop hair loss but there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, not all treatment produce equal results across the board, so what works well for one person may not have positive results for anther. Second, it is much more difficult to re-grow quality hair than it is to retain existing hair so everything possible should be done to pamper each and every remaining hair. Thirdly, the longer you wait the less chance of achieving the desired results.
